with Friendship 802-40 short pip out rubber, how should one counter a loop drive? Is it better to make contact with the ball on the bounce or on the rise or even at the top of the bounce? Lastly, should I direct the stroke (FH) more forward with a closed angle?Tq.

I have not used 802-40, but have used different short pips.

I woud suggest try contacting at the top of the bounce. Slowly you can change to on the bounce or rise. At this stage where you are now, it is difficult to handle the ball after it bounces (after the top of the bounce and the ball takes its real flght).

Your paddle should be little open (not closed) and you have to hit straight to the side facing you (3'o clock). There is forward force is required so you should have a forward follow through. At the follow through it should be little closed.

Look at these videos of Johnny Huang of Canada:

I tried this rubber the other day from another friend and it was quite nice for drive and hard hitting shots. Pretty cheap too hehehe

Most China-made rubbers are cheap like the 729, Dawei, LKT etc. At a slightly higher price is the DHS brand.

My all time favourite is still Butterfly Challenger Attack SP 2.1 Good control, nice balance, power not too bad and the funny thing is when I serve a bottom spin my opponent hits it to the net hey that means it carries lots of spin as well.  Just loving it

The short pips can generate low to heavy underspin - in good variation. Ding Song and Hou Yingchao have taken advantage of short pips in a great way.

At the US Open few months back, I was talking to Thoma Kainath. He has told me that the short pips can run him wild. According to him, a rubber which can give maximum spin variation.

There are two reasons why the ball goes to the net when your opponent returns your serve. It may have under spin or no spin. If your opponent does not know how to return short no spin ball, it will go to net.

Do this experimentation for me. Do the same serve that you do, but try to hit the net. Look at how far the ball is rolling towards you after it hits the net.

I read from some artilcles that some of the model are very similar to inverted rubber. Like TSP Super Spinpip, TSP Tyrano. I am currently using TSP Spectol 21 penhold style. I feel that this give me a very good control compared to China pip out rubber like 563, Dawei 388 B (already banned by ITTF), DHS 874. I can also generate more spin than China rubber. Though the price is slightly higher. Most important, it is more lasting. I have been using Spectol for last 6 months and all the pip still intact. My previous 563 and 874 only last about 3 months on the average due to heavy smashing and blocking.

Yes, some of the short pips can behave very similar to low friction inverted. However, the pips can't generate spin as inverted. You can variety of spin with pips in a rally.

I'm using TSP pips for an year. I have not see a pip breaking.
