I've seen a lot of penholders using Friendship rubber. Has anyone used it that can compare it to, say, Bryce? It seems the Friendship rubber is much cheaper, but is potentially pretty good. If anyone can shed some light on this, I'd appreciate it. Thanks!

The chinese friendship rubbers are heavy and the sponge is hard. Because they are hard, you can really hit and can generate high speed. They are highly tacky also, so you can generate good spin out of it. Whenever I see someone playing against me having friendship rubbers, I know the amount of spin I can expect. It gives me a lot of trouble.

I have tried couple of friendship rubbers, but I did not like it because I prefer medium soft. They are not durable especially the pips rubbers.

Before you buy expensive rubbers, try used ones and choose the one you like the best. You can find the used rubbers in the BUY SELL TRADE section of this website.

If money is not a problem to you, try zeropong.com - zeropong.com is the largest distributor of 729 rubbers in the US. Talk to Bill Ryan or Tom, they will help you out.

Rubbers to me are individual preference. Choose the one that suits your game and budget.

Chinese rubbers are normally hard to generate high speed and tacky too to generate high spin.

I have tried a few Friendship 729 rubbers (Super FX, Tackspeed, cream). My comments :
Super FX (2.0mm) - hard, good for attacking and defending
Tackspeed (0.8mm) - good for defending
Cream (2.0mm) - good for driving/looping, mainly for attacking play.

Bryce is also a good rubber if your style is the attacking type. I never owned one, but I have tried a friend's Bryce and it feels good too. Only budget is the setback.

Sayon, the best Friendship rubbers that I have used so far and keep using are:
Friendship 729FX SuperSoft, a nice soft sponged, not heavy, non-sticky Chinese rubber that tries to give the euro rubber feel.
Friendship Geospin Tacky, a Hurricane like rubber but lighter.

I have horrible stories to tell when I play against Penholders who use these $10 729 blades. I play against a CP player who just tricks me with his serves. Being a shakehand player and use loose grip while serving, I was not able to generate the kind of rotation with any rubber like 729 does. I think the Penholders have the great advantage of using the tacky top sheet to generate spin.

You are correct in the sense that penholders has an advantage when using 729 rubber to generate spin.
A word of advice for a hand-shaker when serving - grip the paddle hard and serve, you will have the same advantages as a penholders does. Or learn some tricky serve like the one shown by a women Japanese players when she played in the recently concluded Beijing Olympic.

It is easier for pen-holders to serve the ball with strong side and under spins. I noticed that many advanced hand-shakers hold the racket differently while serving. You can try to holding your racket as pen-holders and serve tricky side spin balls as well.

Yes, this was shown in the Olympics when one of the handshaker used a penholder grip to serve and revert back to handshake when in normal plays.

Yes, good advice for handshaker too.

Learn tricky serve as Serving contributes about 33% of your game.
